the voice of summer

being a dodger fan is an experience like no other, because we have vin scully, and listening to him, even something as simple as a little two minute introduction for joe torre's press conference today, gives me goosebumps. you can check out the full press conference on the dodgers website, or you can listen to scully's intro here.

"Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good morning to you. Welcome to Dodger Stadium, on what the Irish would call a soft day. Although the calendar says 2007, you really do get the feeling that this is 2008, cause this is the beginning of a year we're all really looking forward to. We'll be celebrating our golden anniversary of this pioneering franchise, that came to the golden west fifty years ago, and over those years winning nine pennants, and five world championships, with seven managers, two of whom spent forty two years at the reins. Both of those managers are now in the Hall of Fame, and now, today, we welcome the eighth manager in the history of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a formidable foe, and he has now become an integral part of the Dodger family. As a player, well, let's look at it: nine times an All Star, Gold Glove, MVP winner. And as a manager, as we all know, twelve consecutive years in the playoffs, and four World Series. So we firmly believe that his day will come, when he goes to that pretty little town in northern New York called Cooperstown. That'll happen. He embodies all of the values that define the Dodgers at their best, and as someone who has known him for so many, many years, I can't tell you how happy, delighted I am that he will finally wear the Dodger uniform. And it's only right, since the roots of the franchise are also his roots, the Borough of Churches, the Borough of Brooklyn."

someone suggested i post the whole thing, so here it is:

light at the end of the tunnel...or is that a train?

For all the acclaim Jeff Tedford gets for resurrecting the Bears, he's also a study in the dangers of running an offensive-minded program. If your QB gets hurt or has a bad day (as happened the past two weeks), your championship hopes are ruined. This happens to Cal almost every year.

- Stewart Mandel's College Football Power Rankings on SI.com

Cal is reeling, going from No. 2 to No. 18 after two straight losses. Now it's off to take on unbeaten Arizona State, but history says Cal will bounce back: the Bears have never lost three straight under Jeff Tedford, bouncing back from consecutive losses by winning by an average of 15.6 points.

life is complex...

life is complex. it has both real and imaginary components.

coolness

don't you love the life you kill...

i never thought i'd say this, but thank god it's monday; the weekend from hell is finally over. and it started off so well, too. i drag my ass out of bed at seven in the morn (and you know how hard that is for me when i'm at home) to watch man city beat birmingham city and stay third in the league. and then it all went down hill from there. cal loses again (!@#$%^&*), raiders drop a close one, the galaxy miss the playoffs, and the lakers lose to the friggin clippers. how i wish i didn't care.

driving home last night, a blast from the past:

question

first and ten on the twelve, fourteen seconds on the clock, no time outs, no open receivers. do you:

a) spike it

b) spike it

c) spike it

d) try and make run for it against the number two rush defense in the pac 10 because you're the second string quarterback and that makes you invincible

we had two weeks to prepare, and this is all we have to show for it? c'mon tedford, you can do better than that. i know everyone says you're too conservative and want to see more gutsy calls, but that was just stupid. a field goal would've put us into overtime. oh well. number one cal had a nice ring to it. i swear, if we have to play in the holiday bowl again, i'm gonna be pissed. bumped into some peninsula alums at the game; that was cool. go panthers!

a craptastic week is (finally) coming to an end. just waiting for a lift from the raiders tomorrow.

and now for the video of the day: (lyrics here)

and because it's raining cats and dogs...

oddly enough i'm not happy right now, for a myriad of reasons, not least of which is the fact that the performance of king lear that i was watching (starring ravi kapoor aka crossing jordan's "bug" in the role of edmund) was rained out midway through the second act. i suppose this would be more representative of my current state of mind:

because there's a f***ing h in it

the funny part isn't the fact that he's in drag; he does that all the time. i'm sure it was funny the first couple hundred times, but now i think he does it because if he doesn't he'll be pelted with tomatoes. either that or he really likes it.

OMFG U SUCK

i think that just about says it all. to give it a little perspective, at the end of last week, tom dienhart of the sporting news made the following comment at the end of his week 5 awards:

they shoot horses, don't they? stanford at usc

and here's the best headline i saw out of all the newspapers in the racks:

i never thought i'd say this, but way to go furd! (now go lose out the season...)

i'm as big a celeb gossip whore as anyone, which is why this video really hit me hard. i'm still a gossip whore, but now i feel bad about some of it. not all. *some*. because some people just deserve to be laughed at.

ps for those of you wondering if i went crazy on that last post, no, i didn't. i already was crazy. that quote was off a bumper sticker being sold at the alternative press expo. it caught my eye because 1) it sounds cool and 2) i like corn dogs. i don't like corn. but i like corndogs. go figure.

Thursday, May 17, 2007

life is like a corn dog.

i don't know why, it just is.

in other news, the cw cancelled veronica mars. the cw sucks. in fact, all network tv companies suck. and record companies too, for that matter. you have to be the best selling product out there or else you get kicked to the curb. whatever happened to just being good?
